In the context of insulating an attic, the vapor barrier plays a critical role in managing moisture and preventing condensation, which can lead to mold growth and structural damage. The correct placement of the vapor barrier is crucial for its effectiveness.

In an attic with two layers of batt insulation, the vapor barrier should be placed below the insulation, between the living space and the insulation. This position is optimal because it prevents warm, moist air from the living space below from reaching the cooler insulation above, where it could condense into water upon contact with the cooler surfaces.

By placing the vapor barrier below the insulation, it effectively blocks moisture from permeating upward into the insulation layers. This setup helps to maintain the integrity of the insulation performance, allowing it to retain its thermal resistance properties without being compromised by moisture, which could reduce its effectiveness and lead to potential issues like mold and wood rot.

In other placements, such as above or between the layers of insulation, the vapor barrier would not perform its intended function as effectively. If it were placed above the insulation, it would allow moisture from below to reach the insulation, negating its protective purpose. Similarly, positioning it between the layers would still allow moisture from the living space to infiltrate the insulation, which could lead to
